Selection of Valves and Their Appropriate Locations

2024-12-04

(A) Valves used in water supply pipelines should generally be selected according to the following principles:

1. For pipe diameters not exceeding 50mm, a globe valve should be used. For diameters larger than 50mm, gate valves or butterfly valves should be used.

2. When flow rate or water pressure needs to be adjusted, a control valve or globe valve should be used.

3. For locations where low water flow resistance is required (such as on the suction side of pumps), a sluice valve should be used.

4. For sections where water flow needs to be bidirectional, gate valves or butterfly valves should be used; globe valves should not be used.

5. For locations with limited installation space, butterfly valves or ball valves should be used.

6. For sections of the pipeline that are frequently opened and closed, a globe valve should be used.

7. On large-diameter pump discharge pipes, a multifunctional valve should be used.

(B) The following locations in the water supply pipeline should be equipped with valves:

1. On the water supply pipeline from the municipal water system to a residential community.

2. At the nodes of the outdoor ring network of the residential community, valves should be installed according to the sectioning requirements. If the ring network is too long, sectional valves should be installed.

3. At the end of each branch pipe or the starting point of the service pipe connected to the water supply main of the residential community.

4. At the inlet pipe, water meter, and the branch risers (at the bottom of the vertical risers, and at both ends of the vertical loop network risers).

5. On the branch mains of a ring network or connecting pipes of a through-type branching network.

6. On the distribution pipes to residences, public toilets, etc., when there are three or more distribution points on the branch pipe.

7. On the discharge pipe of the pump, and the suction side of self-priming pumps.

8. On the inlet, outlet, and overflow pipes of the water tank.

9. On the makeup water pipes of equipment (such as heaters, cooling towers, etc.).

10. On the water supply pipes to sanitary fixtures (such as toilets, washbasins, showers, etc.).

11. On certain accessories, such as automatic air vents, pressure relief valves, water hammer arrestors, pressure gauges, fire hydrants, etc., as well as before and after pressure-reducing valves and backflow preventers.

12. A drain valve should be installed at the lowest point of the water supply pipeline network.
