When clients ask us whether a gate valve is suitable for throttling flow, our answer is always straightforward: it’s not recommended. Having designed and supplied valves for industrial systems over the past two decades, we’ve seen firsthand the consequences of using valves in ways they weren’t engineered for. So why is this such a common question? And what should you use instead?
A gate valve is designed for one primary function—on/off service. Its construction includes a flat or wedge-shaped gate that moves perpendicular to the flow. When you try to use it for throttling, the gate is left partially open. This exposes the gate and seat to high-velocity fluid, which can cause rapid erosion, vibration, and damage. Instead of achieving precise flow control, you risk premature failure.
In our experience, this almost always leads to:
Seat and disk damage
Unstable flow control
Frequent maintenance
While we strongly advise against using any gate valve for throttling, our LYV® series is built to higher durability standards. Even so, we recommend using it strictly for isolation. Here’s how the LYV® gate valve is constructed:
Body Material: ASTM A216 WCB
Max Pressure: 300 PSI
Temperature Range: -20°F to 400°F
Operation: Handwheel, Gear, or Actuated
End Connection: Flanged, RF or RTJ
Even with its robust build, the LYV® gate valve is not intended for throttling. Its metal-to-metal seal and rising stem design excel in shut-off scenarios—not flow regulation.
If you need to throttle flow, consider these alternatives designed specifically for modulation:
Valve Type | Best Use Case | Advantages Over Gate Valve |
---|---|---|
Globe Valve | Precise throttling | Better flow control |
Ball Valve | Quick operation | Low pressure drop |
Butterfly Valve | Large pipe applications | Cost-effective |
At LYV®, we offer a range of control valves designed for throttling. Each provides finer control and longer service life when used in partial flow situations.
For twenty years, LYV® has provided valves that meet strict performance standards. Whether you need a reliable gate valve for isolation or a dedicated control valve, our products come with:
